Our Logo, Just Where Did it Come From?
We call the creature a Muddog, but it’s based on a real animal – a Tiger Salamander! The Tiger Salamander is a carnivorous amphibian that looks like a cross between a frog and a lizard, with little legs and a long tail.
Their average size is 6 - 8 inches (15-20cm) but can grow as big as 14 inches (35 cm) long. The larvae have gills that are later absorbed when they metamorphose (these gills are the red “tentacles” you see in our muddog). The Tiger Salamander is the largest land-dwelling salamander on earth and is found throughout the United Sates, southern Canada, and eastern Mexico. The animals prefer to live near ponds, lakes, or slow-moving streams, but stay underground in burrows up to 2 feet (60 cm) deep and usually return to the water only to breed. A Tiger Salamander has an average lifespan of 12 - 15 years in the wild.
Is this your idea of a Mascot?
Absolutely! When our company started out in 1996 with a new water filtration technology, our president used a tank of tiger salamanders to grab people’s attention at trade shows. This gave him the opportunity to both explain the animals, as well as the services his company offered. The Muddog, needless to say, has been our calling card ever since. Read more about our history!
